Description

‘Essence’ is inspired by fractals found in nature.

A fractal is a geometric form in which similar patterns recur at progressively smaller scales. It has been proven that people are hardwired to find calm in them. The sheer symmetry and cohesion of these patterns soothes the part of our brain that is constantly trying to make order from the chaos around us.

“I designed this sculpture to convert sound into coloured light with a scientifically meaningful correlation. The synchronised audio-visual display encourages focus in the observer, thereby helping to ease tension and enhance mindfulness.”

This light sculpture detects sound using an integrated precision microphone. From there it converts the predominant frequency of sound into an equally proportionate frequency of coloured light.

A sound responsive geometric sculpture for your wall

Bass sounds, which have the lowest frequencies, translate as red, which in turn has the lowest frequency of coloured light. As the sound frequencies change, so does the colour, ranging from red at the lowest end, going through the spectrum, up to violet and magenta at the highest end of the frequency range.

Technical notes:

‘Essence’ is a wall mounted sculpture with an internal smart control system, connected to state-of-the-art LEDs that are concealed within the outer frame. This enables interaction via an app, allowing the selection of colours, programming of sequences and an almost infinite variety of lighting effects. The piece can be integrated into smart home systems and has an internal microphone, which transforms the sound that is sensed into a synchronised audio-visual display.
